Dr. Arthur Katz, an experienced, skilled, and licensed otolaryngologist/medical doctor, sees patients for ear, nose, and throat conditions and has two office locations in Munster, IN, and Flossmoor, IL. Our doctor wants to discuss diet and nutrition as they relate to those who have asthma.

Diet and Nutrition for Respiratory Disorder

A limitless list of things can exacerbate symptoms, such as allergens, stress, environmental factors, pet dander/hair, foods, beverages, physical over-exertion, infections, and many other foods. Reacting to these things does not mean you have this respiratory disorder, so it takes this doctor's expertise to determine if you are asthmatic to provide the correct treatment plan for you to see a decrease in symptoms.

You can help control this respiratory disorder through nutrition and diet because you must remove some foods from your diet if they worsen symptoms.

The Connection Between This Respiratory Disorder and Your Diet

It is possible to manage this condition when mindful of foods that may cause food intolerances, sensitivities, or allergies. Eating fresh fruits, vegetables, and wholesome foods versus processed foods may improve your overall health if you are asthmatic.

Some foods you eat may cause your asthmatic symptoms to worsen, and you should avoid them. Certain foods can make your immune system overreact to particular proteins in those foods and may cause you symptoms of an asthmatic attack.

Your weight has much to do with the foods you consistently eat. Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, less red meat, and more whole foods versus eating an abundance of processed foods keeps your weight within a better range. It is challenging to manage and treat symptoms if you are obese. Eating a balanced diet daily makes it easier to manage symptoms.

If you are asthmatic, it is wise to add the following things to your diet.

  • Magnesium/vitamin D/Beta Carotene-rich foods
  • Vitamin A
  • Apples/Bananas

Medical research finds that you must avoid sulfites, salicylates, artificial ingredients, preservatives, additives, and food dyes. If you have increased asthmatic symptoms after eating a specific food, you must avoid that food in the future. If you eat that food again, your symptoms could be life-threatening next time.

Some asthmatic individuals cannot eat dairy, shellfish, wheat, and nuts due to an allergy or food sensitivity.
